  • AUDITOR'S REPORT Rockefeller Funds $2,668,740.09: (Schedule 1) This sum represents the amount received by the North Carolina Park Commission from the $5,000,000.00 Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Fund donated for the purpose of assisting in establishing the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in North Carolina and Tennessee. A copy of the Rockefeller Agreement is appended hereto. State Funds $2,000,000.00: (Schedule 2) Represents a State of North Carolina Bond issue, the proceeds of which were received by the North Carolina Park Commission for reimbursement of land purchased. The State money was restricted to purchase of land only. The accounting of this money is shown in Schedule 2 of this report. Public Subscriptions Received $151,725.44: The Public subscribed the sum of $397,174.67 toward the creation of the park, of this amount only $151,725.44 was received. No attempt is now being made to collect the unpaid Subscriptions. Copy riglited Material Western Carolina University Federal Funds $944,393.58: Hunter Library In April 1934, this sum was received from the Federal Government and was used as follows: Payment of Suncrest Lumber Co. Judgment $310,454.78 Proportional Part of Ravensford Lumber Co. Judgment 633,938.80 Total Federal Funds Received $944,393.58 Land Acquired 229,469.01 Acres: (Schedule 3) The total land acquired by the Commission on the North Carolina side of the Park amounted to 229,469.01 acres, and all has been conveyed to the United States Government. The title abstracts have been forwarded to Washington and Gatlinburg. The Cost of Land was: Direct Purchase Price of 229,469.01 Acres—Schedule 3 $5,140,353.62 Mineral Interests Acquired—Schedule 4 3,518.73 Timber Rights Acquired 8,500.00 Land Options and Registration Fees 2,579.40 Total Cost of 229,469.01 Acres $5,154,951.75 Expenses $591,881.92: The expenses paid by the Commission amounted to $591,881.92 divided as follows: Equipment Purchased, Salaries and Expenses—Schedule 5 $249,717.86 Subscription Expense—Schedule 6 44,245.32 Litigation Expense—Schedule 7 297,512.42 Interest Paid 406.32 Total Expenses $591,881.92

  • This North Carolina Park Commission Report was completed at the close of 1939 and submitted to North Carolina Governor Clyde R. Hoey. The 62-page publication, compiled for the Commission by Albert H. Blake, begins with a letter to the governor reporting that all of the land on the North Carolina side of the park has been purchased and conveyed to the federal government. The report includes an auditor’s report, information about the Rockefeller fund, and a copy of the 1927 law that brought the commission into being. The report includes lists tracts of land, family names, and values paid for purchase. W.W. Neal was chairman of the commission at the time and G.F. Hankins was secretary.
