  • Page 4 Parts Of Diary Of Samuel Roberts Owens, Jap Prisoner, Found (Continued from page 1) after the fall of Corregidor and the last two years later. He wrote: "My name is Samuel Robert Owens. Rate, Torpedoman, First Class, United States Navy. Anyone hearing this please notify Mrs. S. J. Owens, Webster, North Carolina. I am in a good state of health. I wasn't wounded and I have no serious illness. I hope the allotment is still running and that times are not too hard with you. "I have received some letters from you and my sisters, also a food package. I certainly did appreciate them. Send me another it you get a chance . . . Your loving son." The second paper: "Well, here I am in Billibid in the hospital alter toeing a prisoner of war 20 months and I'm still going strong. I never would have thought we would have been here in this status this long because we have the richest and most productive nation in the world behind us, but I expect to see them some day. "The Americans I have come in contact with as prisoners of war have taught me much. I have learned to cook, to sew my own clothes and many other things I was dependent on some one else for. Some substitutes that I have used for common commodities nave even amazed me. "This episode, I do believe, will help me in later life to appreciate the smaller things that I always took for granted before the war—
