DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR Information Service NATIONAL PARK SERVICE For Release SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 1, 1940. Dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the East's last remaining great primitive mountain wilderness park, will be made by President Roosevelt on Labor Day. Secretary of the Interior Harold L. Ickes, presiding, will introduce the two State governors, Clyde R. Hoey of North Carolina, and Prentice Cooper of Tennessee, who also will speak. The Rev. Fred F. Brown will pronounce the invocation and Bishop Clare Purcell the benediction. The Knoxville High School Band and the North Carolina State Band will furnish music. Newfound Gap, on the State line of the bi-State park is the site of the ceremonies. Nearby a tablet in rustic setting witnesses that "For the permanent enjoyment of the people this park was given; one-half by the peoples and States of North Carolina and Tennessee and the United States of America, and one-half in memory of Laura Spelman Rockefeller by the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, founded by her husband, John D. Rockefeller." The dedication site is 53 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee, and 87 miles from Asheville, North Carolina. From Newfound Gap a highway leads up to a 6,311-foot elevation on Clingmans Dome. This is the highest highway in the East. From the end of the highway a trail goes on to the top of the Dome — elevation 6,642 feet. This press release from the Department of the Interior and the National Park Service announces the events planned for the dedication of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park on Labor Day, September 2, 1940. A crowd of 10,000 came to Newfound Gap to hear President Franklin D. Roosevelt speak. Five hundred members of the Civilian Conservation Corps were on hand to direct and manage the crowd. A podium was set up on the North Carolina and Tennessee state lines, so that speakers stood with one foot in each state. The event was presided over by the Secretary of the Interior, Harold Ickes.
