Olive Dame Campbell with small carving

  • wcu_craft_revival-4316.jpg
  • This portrait of Olive Dame Campbell was taken by Doris Ulmann in 1933 or 1934. Campbell founded the John C. Campbell Folk School in 1925. During Ulmann's several trips to photograph in the Brasstown area, she and Campbell cultivated a deep friendship that lasted until Ulmann's death in 1934. This photograph shows Campbell holding a small carving most likely created through the school's woodcarving cooperative which later became known as the Brasstown Carvers.
