Louise L. Pitman to members of the Southern Highland Handicraft Guild, 1940

  • wcu_craft_revival-5880.jp2
  • This short letter from Southern Highland Handicraft Guild President Louise Pitman is addressed to members of the Guild. Its purpose is to announce an upcoming meeting to be held in the fall of 1940. The Guild typically held both a spring and fall meeting for its general membership. Of note in Pitman’s letter is her announcement of a talk by Mary Ela of the Berea College Art Department. Berea College was in the forefront of the Craft Revival, promoting crafts as part of its art curriculum and establishing a “fireside industries” production program to provide employment and teach craft skills. The announcement illustrates how the Guild networked with other organizations to promote crafts and provide educational opportunities for its membership. Pitman was Crafts Director at the John C. Campbell Folk School and later moved to Asheville.
