(El) THUMPER. Otherwise fTthumpinT chist;" part of distilling MOIMT YOHAGUSKA. This name is suggested for the hitherto unnamed highest point on Balsam Mountains between Luftee Knob and the State line. Yonaguska was the last great chief of the Eastern Cherokees. He formed an Indian settlement on the present site of Bryson City which was called Bear'-'s town {mentioned in Davenport's field-book of the State line survey in 1821}. The name means Drowning Bear. (See Mooney*s History of the Cherokees for his career.) MOTHcTT LOVE Clingmans Dome is not a single well-defined peak, but and a mountain with a long top on which are three knobs, MOUNT BUCKLEY concerning which Prof. Arnold Guyot stated: !TIt would seem natural that the names of the three gentlemen of the party, and not that of one only, should be recalled by being applied to the three highest peaks which compose that group. The central or highest peak is therefore designated as ClingmanTs Dome, the south perJc, next in height, .s Mount Buckley, the north peak as Mount Love.11 Guyot's measurements of the three are;- Clingman1 s Dome 6,660 ft. Mt. Buckley 6,599 Mt. Love 6,443 On the Term. Park Commissions topographic map they are:- Clingman's Dome 6,642 Mt. Buckley 6,500 plus Mt, Love ~ 6,400 plus * The recent IT* 3. G. 8. bench mark on Clingmans Dome reads 6,642.8. It is suggested by the Nomenclature Committee of the Forth Carolina Park Commission that the three names Clingman, Love and Buckley be retained as located on Guyot's map.
