HISTORY Company No. 411, Civilian Conservation Corps, N. C. 5-P was established May 26, 1933, at the mouth of Kephart Prong of the Oconaluffty River, 23 miles north of Bryson City, North Carolina The company of 126 Tar Heel boys began actual work in the forests June 5, 1933, constructing roads and bridges and clearing the woods of brush and undergrowth. The camp of Company 411 is located 3,000 feet above sea level and is the second highest camp in the Great Smoky Mountains The name of Kephart Prong was a gesture in the memory of Horace Kephart, who about 1900 moved into this area to begin a study of natural life in the Eastern mountains. Kephart published his findings in various magazines, directing attention of the people of the country to the Smoky Mountains. Kep- hart's book, "Our Southern Highlands," written later, is said to be one of the most accurate portrayals of life, speech and mannerisms yet attempted in the Smokies. Boys in the camp have been active in athletics and have given much attention to boxing. Liberty parties to nearby towns also furnish recreation. Introduction of the educational program several months ago proved popular and many of the boys of the company are using the classes to occupy their leisure time. Since its establishment, Company 411 has had the following commanding officers: Captain Crist, Captain Davenport, Cap* Campbell, Captain Stone, Captain Chapman, Lieutenant Schaffet and Lieutenant Waters.
