Likely Johanne “Jacob” Shook

  • This portrait is likely a photograph of a painting of Johanne “Jacob” Shook (1749-1839). Jacob Shook and Isabella Weitzell (1749-1834) were married in 1773 and settled in what is now Clyde, N.C. after he served in the American Revolutionary War. They bought land along the Pigeon River and built the earliest known frame dwelling in the area which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Shook-Welch-Smathers House. Written on the frame of the photograph is J. M. McCanless 12 N. Pack Square Asheville, N.C. James Melton McCanless (1858-1942) had various photography studios in Asheville since at least 1895 to around 1920.
