  • The Cherokee Historical A DRAMA OF THE Initiated by Western N. C. The Author Kermit Hunter Poet, musician, teacher, playwright—these are a few of the titles appropriate for Kermit Hunter, author of Unto These Hills. The success of his drama of the Cherokee Indian has made him one of the most sought-after young playwrights in America. He is the author of Horn in the West, a drama of the Southern Appalachians in the 1770's, which is produced annually at Boone, N. C. His most recent work is Chucky Jack, a historical drama produced this summer at Gatlinburg, Tenn. A fast turn through Mr. Hunter's biography furnishes the key to what makes his writing click. He was awarded the Vandewater Poetry Prize at Ohio State University in 1931. He studied piano at Julliard in New York, won the West Virginia Young Artists' contest in piano in 1933, and was a church organist for fifteen years. He taught in the English department of the University of North Carolina from 1947 until 1956, when he joined the faculty of Hollins College in Virginia. He has had three plays produced by the famous Carolina Playmakers. A native of what was at one time Cherokee hunting ground in Southern West Virginia, Mr. Hunter graduated at Ohio State University, traveled in Europe, worked for several years on various newspapers, spent nearly four years outside of the United States during World War II as a lieutenant colonel of infantry, received the Legion of Merit, settled in North Carolina to become the first business manager of the first state symphony orchestra in America, then later enrolled at the University to begin work on a Ph.D degree. He received a master's degree in Dramatic Art at Chapel Hill in 1949. His play, Unto These Hills, which was accepted as his master's thesis, is perhaps the first piece of writing in the country to be scheduled for professional production before being submitted as part of a scholastic requirement. It is with pride that the Cherokee Historical Association honors the playwright, and offers his work as a large step in its program to perpetuate the history and traditions of the Cherokee Indians.
