words, is primarily intended for the teacher performing the services of a professional practitioner. Specifically, the objectives of this program are: 1. Continuance of the professional training of both elementary and high school teachers, by expanding and intensifying their knowledge and understanding of children, of school problems, of subject fields, and of teaching techniques. 2. Preparation of such teachers as already hold the undergraduate professional degree to become specifically qualified as school superintendents, or principals, or supervisors, or "special education" teachers, while earning the Master's degree. A brief outline of the graduate program explaining admission, residence, course requirements, and course offerings for the two summer terms is given on the last pages of this bulletin. For complete information concerning the graduate program, write for a copy of the Graduate Bulletin. Address your request to The Director, Graduate Division Western Carolina College Cullowhee, North Carolina SPECIAL FEATURES Demonstration School and Supervised Teaching The College operates a demonstration and laboratory school for the six weeks coinciding with the first term. This school functions to support the total program of work in the Teacher Education Department and serves three special purposes as follows: 1. A Laboratory for Student Teaching Enrollment in the courses in Directed Observation and Supervised Teaching (Ed. 454ab, P, G, H, or S) is limited to advanced students who have had teaching experience. The course is open to these advanced students, in so far as facilities allow, in all elementary grades and in high school courses in the fields of English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. Preference will be given to students who are within twelve weeks of graduation and to the order in which applications for student teaching are received. Written application, addressed to the Head of the Education Department, should be submitted before May 1. 2. A Demonstration School The course, Observation and Evaluation in Elementary Education (Ed. 433a), is directly dependent upon the Demonstration School. Other courses in the teacher education program make frequent use of demonstration lessons from time to time. The program to prepare teachers for Special Education makes constant use of special cases and special education classes for demonstration purposes (see page 18). In addition, classes are open for individual observers at all times.

This 42-page scrapbook was put together by Levern Hamlin, a Roanoke, Virginia native who moved to Cullowhee, North Carolina in 1957 to attend Western Carolina College. Levern Hamlin was not only the first African American to attend Western Carolina College but the first African American admitted to a North Carolina state college. As a speech therapist practicing in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hamlin decided to further her training in special education through the college’s graduate division. The scrapbook begins with Hamlin’s account of her arrival at WCC on June 11, 1957 and includes numerous clippings describing the significance of her enrollment. The scrapbook contains entries from her summer semester at WCC extending to July 20th, 1957 when she arrived back at her home in Virginia. Hamlin had previously attained a Bachelor of Science degree in education from Virginia’s Hampton Institute in 1956. Also included are pamphlets and clippings at the end of the scrapbook.
