There’s to be a special exhibit of the Students work on April 28 & Lucy may go down for it. A good chance to love over the school & faculty etc. She is hesitating over the expense of the trip. But she has earned it & also quite a piece of money tending to the Buffalo boys affairs. David has developed into a fine man — thanks to the Army — but even the Army has failed to make a man out of Howard. He has married a no account gold-digger, who does not want to live in her native Buffalo, for various reasons. All our knowledge of her is hearsay from H’s friends & her family, but all agree on her undesirableness. They “wish to have nothing to do with our old life. Marion & I will make a life of our own.” Hence they have bought a house on the Heights here, repudiated all their friends & relatives — except the name & money —, he is back over seas, she is here in Ithaca, among strangers in a strange town.

In this letter of April 13, 1945, Laura Kephart writes her son Leonard Kephart the day after the 58th anniversary of her marriage to Horace. She mentions that F. D. R. has died and she is happy he is out of the White House. She shares details of Susie’s wedding that Cornelia shared with her. Susie is Laura’s granddaughter. She talks about how Cornell has changed under the direction of Ezra Day and how the campus is overrun with Army and Navy men. She updates him on friends and relatives including Lucy, Manton, David, and Howard.
