  • Diversified Industry brings Success to Knoxville KNOXVILLE is an important industrial city, having 278 manufacturing plants making over 400 highly diversified products and groups of products. Federal Census reports for 1923 which do not include plants with an output of less than $5,000 annually, show a value of $61,370,973 for the annual output of 197 of the largest of Knoxville's industrial plants. This is an increase of over $9,000,000, or 18.7% above the 1919 record. The Federal Census also shows an average of 14,581 employees in these plants, with total annual wages aggregating $12,813,081. This is an increase of almost $3,000,000, or 29.3% over the 1919 record. Textile and Clothing Textile mills and clothing factories constitute the largest group in Knoxville's list of diversified industries. 20 textile and clothing plants employ 6,283 workmen, annual wage $4,212,268, with combined annual output of $22,295,150. The products of these plants include yarns, hosiery, cassimeres, men's knit underwear, corduroy, velveteen, tire fabrics and scores of other cotton specialty fabrics. The products of the clothing factories include men's suits, overcoats, overalls, shirts and work gloves. Metal-Working Plants The Federal Census report shows the metal- working industries of Knoxville as having 2,250 employees, annual payroll of $2,300,000 with an annual output of $9,250,000. Products of these plants include rolled iron and steel, temperature regulating devices, coal mine equipment, marble mill machinery, flour, meal and feed mill machinery, stoves and general foundry products. The largest plant in the world devoted exclusively to the manufacture of temperature regulating devices is located in Knoxville. Wood-Working Plants Wood-working plants in Knoxville furnish employment for 1,300 employees, annual payroll aggregates $1,041,683, annual output of these plants is $5,275,472. Many millions of dollars worth of additional lumber is sold at wholesale by Knoxville firms. A complete line of furniture is made by furniture factories. Tennessee Marble 11 companies producing the world-famous Tennessee marble operate in Knoxville. These plants employ 765 workmen, with annual payroll of $830,299. The Federal Census shows the output in 1923 was $2,496,480. Many of the quarries have doubled their output since that time. Tennessee marble has many distinctive qualities. It does not absorb water; is not stained by oils, has a crushing strength of 25,000 pounds per square inch and analyzes over 98% CaCO3. It is found in various shades of gray and pink. Knoxville is the South's largest producer of lime, which is made by burning waste marble. Miscellaneous Industries Products valued at $28,271,371 were manufactured in 1923 by a large group of Knoxville's miscellaneous industries. 9,489 workmen are employed in these plants. The combined wages are $5,973,611. The Federal Census does not include scores of plants which have less than $5,000 annual output.
