.J.,,- Trains to Every JMarket "jLTNOXVILLE and the other cities of East -1A"^-Tennessee enjoy splendid shipping facilities. There are a number of trunk line railroads giving direct connection with all markets. Knoxville is served by the Southern Railway System, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and the Knoxville and Carolina Railroad. These roads have lines radiating in 9 different directions from Knoxville. Among the other railway systems serving East Tennessee are included the Clinchfield Railroad, formerly the C. C. & O. Railway, the Tennessee & Western North Carolina. These railroads not only afford unusually good shipping facilities for East Tennessee, but, in addition, they give employment to thousands of skilled workmen in their gigantic shops as well as in the operating departments. In Knoxville alone, the railroads give employment to over 5,500 trainmen and skilled mechanics. The payroll for these workmen is $10,200,000 COSTER SHOPS Largest Shops On Southern Railway System JOHN SEVIER YARDS Three Million Dollar Switching and Classification Yards annually. The additional railroad payrolls, paid at the various other cities of East Tennessee run into several million dollars. A total of 66 passenger trains enter and leave Knoxville daily. There is a direct Pullman and dining car service to all sections. An average of over 100 freight trains daily efficiently serve the manufacturing plants, stores and farms of this city and section. The largest shops of the Southern Railway System are located in Knoxville. Shops for the L & N are located at Etowah, and the Clinchfield Railroad has its shops at Erwin. The Southern Railway has, at a cost of $3,000,000, just completed its John Sevier switching and classification yards at Knoxville. Railroads which penetrate every section of East Tennessee have helped to bring about the development of many of the natural resources which are found in this region in such abundant variety and quantity. ! Produced by the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, this 22-page booklet promotes the area in and around Knoxville, Tennessee. Titled, “Just the High Spots of Knoxville and East Tennessee,” the book is a curious mix of promotion. While the brochure promotes the idea of a national park in the Great Smokies, it equally touts industrial progress with pages devoted to agriculture, transportation, education, industry, and hydro-electric development.
