• •<> ^Millions for Highways CEDAR LANE TOURING 1925 Tennessee spent more than -U-*'$12,000,000 for highways. The estimated expenditure for 1926 is almost $20,000,000. Of the $12,000,000 spent in 1925, $3,000,000 was devoted to maintenance and $9,000,000 for new paving. A large portion of this money was spent in East Tennessee where the present state highway program was inaugurated. The maintenance program has attracted nation-wide attention because it has enabled the Highway Department to take old roads and put them in good condition until new roads can be paved. The improvements already made have brought thousands of tourists to the picturesque scenic highways of East Tennessee. With the establishment of the Smoky Mountains National Park there will be spent from $5,- 000,000 to $10,000,000 for first class highways through the park area. The proposed sky-line drive along the state line between Tennessee and North Carolina will become the outstanding scen ic highway of the entire world, according to members of the National Park Commission. All of this highway will be one mile above the immediate base of the mountain. Provision has already been made for the construction of commercial and tourist highways through the Park area crossing at Indian Gap and Deal's Gap. These will give direct connection between Eastern Tennessee and Western North Carolina. Many other important highways are being constructed, and still others are contemplated. Among those now under construction is the Knox- ville to Atlanta short line, running through Mary- ville, Madisonville, Etowah and Benton. This highway will be almost 50 miles shorter than any present route. The Chambers of Commerce, Automobile Clubs and Civic Clubs are co-operating with the Tennessee Highway Department, and when the present program is completed no state will have better roads than Tennessee. Produced by the Knoxville Chamber of Commerce, this 22-page booklet promotes the area in and around Knoxville, Tennessee. Titled, “Just the High Spots of Knoxville and East Tennessee,” the book is a curious mix of promotion. While the brochure promotes the idea of a national park in the Great Smokies, it equally touts industrial progress with pages devoted to agriculture, transportation, education, industry, and hydro-electric development.
