  • $200^00,000 to be Spent for Hydro-Electric tyower 'Development Will bring equal, or greater, amount in Industrial Development A PPLICATIONS were pending before the Federal Water Power Commission (in Jan. 1926) for permits to make preliminary surveys for eleven power sites on the Tennessee, Clinch and Powell Rivers. The estimated cost of erection of these eleven dams and installation of generating machinery is $100,000,000. These sites, together with others located on the Tennessee River and other tributaries, have possibilities of developing over 1,500,000 primary H. P. Hydraulic engineers estimate that other power projects on the Tennessee River and its tributaries which are now under construction, or which are contemplated will cost at least another $100,000,- 000. In addition to being a big thing of themselves, these dams will greatly increase the primary power at Muscle Shoals, which is also on the Tennessee River. With the development of these power sites, it is estimated that there will be an influx of industries into East Tennessee, representing an investment far in excess of the cost of the power dams, which will make this section literally the Ruhr of America. It will bring scores of large textile mills, as well as a big number of electro-chemical industries. In fact, there are a number of large industries which have already indicated their desire to locate' in East Tennessee as soon as the additional power is available. The vast quantities of hydro-electric power to be developed will greatly increase the industrial activities of Knoxville and other East Tennessee cities. Another benefit will be that farm life throughout the fertile Tennessee valley will be revolutionized. Farm homes and barns will be brightened with electric lights. Pumps, saws and other farm machinery will be operated by electricity generated from some of the numerous power dams which will be scattered throughout East Tennessee; SWIFT MOUNTAIN STREAMS TO BE HARNESSED Page Five
