  • JACKSON COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS By The HISTORICAL COMMITTEE JACKSON COUNTY UNIT NORTH CAROLINA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION 1954 ^j/oreword It is a pleasure to present this little volume prepared by your committee. We realize that these records searched out and set down by us are not complete, but what we have found and presented here we hope will be acceptable to our friends and fellow teachers as a beginning, to which the achievements of our contemporaries and successors will be added in an able and accurate manner. Much of the material which we should have given has been lost. Those who read these pages may know of other faces, names, and experiences which you think should have been included. We could not present them because we could not find them. Let us insist that full and accurate records be kept and filed hereafter. We have not devoted all our time and effort to the presentation of monotonous records. As you turn these pages, your heart will burn with human interest, meeting again some of those personalities who gave freely that we may have. From the beginning to the present, our educational growth in Jackson County is worthy of note and admiration. It is not only a touch, but it is the genuine embrace of the full American way of life. Accept these tokens, read them, and add to them. Jonathan E. Brown Chairman, Historical Committee Jackson County Unit North Carolina Education Association ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS For their contributions of special articles, for help in assembling the materials and for many constructive suggestions, I would like to extend my appreciation to Mr. W. Vernon Cope, Mr. W. R. Enloe, Mr. J. E. Brown, Mr. Frank I. Watson, Mrs. Stella Cowan Bryson, Mrs. Evelyn McMahan, Mr. S. J. Phillips, Mr. W. E. Bird, and Mrs. Irene Buchanan. Particularly, I would like to thank Mrs. Juanita Proffit for allowing us to use extensive notes which she had collected in research from old Jackson County newspapers. Mary R. Cowan President, Jackson County Unit North Carolina Education Association
