Interview with Sue McClure, woodcarver

Item
?

Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • This is a transcript of an interview of woodcarver Sue McClure conducted by Edward Dupuy in 1965. McClure lived in Brasstown, N.C. and sold her carvings during the Craft Revival period through a carving cooperative that came to be known as the Brasstown Carvers. In this interview, she talks about learning to carve at the John C. Campbell Folk School with Murrial Martin. McClure carves animals and prefers apple wood - a very hard wood with "a smoother grain." She tells a story about trying to carve a realistic chicken. Dupuy's 1967 book "Artisans of the Appalachians" contains an essay on McClure that is based on this interview.
