Hikers on Clingmans Dome

Both Asheville, North Carolina and Knoxville, Tennessee advocated for a park in the southern Appalachians. Each had their own hiking club. In this photograph, hikers from both towns pose atop Clingmans Dome. The picture is in the collection of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club, an organization formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924.
