  • THE HA OD BARK -i* **> Nantahala -** Homer Williams, our machinist, made a business trip to Asheville with parts of "sick" cylinders of our No. 25 locomotive for "treatment" in the foundry. The trip was made in a truck. Chicken for lunch? Their smiles show it. These are Nantahala men (left to right)—Jack Bryant, milt foreman; Lem Holcomb, mill fireman and Thurman Medford, pond man. Ed Craddock and John Franklin, of McClure, were here several days and went trout fishing. They had a bunch of Rainbow trout to carry back with them ($?$). All are good "fishermen". . . . Mr. James Horner, a former Ritter man, was here not long ago shaking hands with many Hazel Creek friends of old. . . George Cary, Charleston, W. Va., spent a day here recently selling clothing, which he claims is as good as his line of talk. . . Dr. and Mrs. McGuire have returned from a vacation visiting Mr. McGuire's relatives in Ohio, New York, Michigan and elsewhere. . . We have been having a number of cases of whooping cough. . . Howard Bateman, one of our train crew, is recovering nicely. . . Mrs. Hugh Nuckols has been visiting her parents at Waynesville. . . Charles Wilson, Jr., of Andrews, recently spent a week with his friends here. Among recent official visitors were Messrs. W. M. Ritter, W. M. Pryor, H. W. Shawhan, E. E. Ritter, S. L. Calfee, E. P. Burr, J. B. Patton, S. M. Wolfe and A. W. Agee. They were a jolly bunch and we hope to have them all come again. . . Several of our citizens have the "Chevie" fever. New owners of sedans include J. G. Fleming, Bill Gilliand and Howard Bateman. Howard is a good instructor as he has proved his worth in teaching certain folks how to drive. . . Mrs. Wiley Vaught visited friends at Sylva and Waynesville not long ago. . . Saturday seems to be our lucky day, as apparently every operation we have had among our people has been performed on that day. Mr. Bill Gilliand. Andrews-Nantahala trainman, who was in Dr. Angel's Hospital, has recovered nicely. We could not get along without Dr. Angel. . . Mr. S. M. Wolfe says the fish are fine here. He eats fish twice a day when he is here. Lem Holcombe, day fireman, while on a business trip to Asheville, visited the $10,000,000 rayon plant near that city. This factory, on State Highway Two O I d Timers: Jim Davis, yard engineer, 2 3 years at Col- l e t o n and Willie Young (right) head sawmill fireman, 22 years' service 10 is said to be the largest of its kind in the world. . . J. W. (Doc) Stanley made a pleasant trip to Asheville recently. . . Mrs. H. D. Franklin, with her "school class", went on a fishing trip along the Nantahala between Rainbow Springs and Aquone, June 1. We understand they "stole" a ride on our Nantahala-Andrews train by means of a bunch of flowers. . . The Rev. Mr. Stanberry, of Marble, formerly pastor of Hazel Creek Bap tist Church, preached two very interesting sermons on Saturday night and Sunday, June 1 and 2. . . Mr. J. G. Horner, formerly superintendent of Hazel Creek operation, paid us a few hours' visit June 4. We hope he will come oftener. . . Mr. E. H. Danielson, of Fontana, spent a week end at the home of his parents here. . . James Woodard and Mr. and Mrs. Grace Fleming of the clubhouse recently spent a week end at Almond, N. C. . . Several of our friends have been wondering if there isn't some news in the woods. •-#- Maben t»* As an evidence that our machine shop and car shop crews are on the job, two new standard gauge logging cars have been built out and out, standard gauge caboose has been overhauled and repainted, log loader overhauled and repainted, all within the last few weeks, in addition to the regular routine, and now locomotive No. 581 is undergoing a complete overhauling. . . . The average daily cut on the hand mill for the month of May was very good. Our high school closed with commencement exercises at the Community Building Tuesday night, May 28. The graduates this year were Mr. Thomas Damron, Miss Leona Caldwell and Miss Edith Brown. A very fine play was presented at the Community House Friday, May 24, called "The Boomer." The cast of characters included Gordon Bonallo, Edith Brown, Leona Caldwell, Lloyd Braswell, Alton Caldwell, Dorothy Pryor, Thomas Damron, Delmas Caldwell, Lillian Waldron, Verona Bailey and Harold Lindie on the front seat and Ned in the rear, on a tour of inspection-..of Colleton mill. , ---• _ , Twelve
