Item’s are ‘child’ level descriptions to ‘parent’ objects, (e.g. one page of a whole book).

  • This year the educational meetings will be continued. No program has been announced, but it is understood that well qualified speakers will bring before us new phases of the natural science of the hills, accounts of the coming and passing of the mountain people and perhaps of the machinery and accomplishments of the National Park Service in the Great Smokies. The time, place, and subject of these meetings will be announced at a later time. In these, as in all our activities, visitors are welcome. SECOND PHOTOGRAPHIC CONTEST The Directors of the Club are so pleased with the interest in, and the results of, the first photographic contest, that it has been decided to have it again this year. So "for four of the best photographs, taken by amateur photographers within the Club membership, from November 1, 1933, to November 1, 1934, awards of distinction will be made by the Directors of the Club." Pictures submitted must have been taken in East Tennessee or Western North Carolina. The subject matter must relate to those subjects of primary interest to the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. Not more than two awards will be made for pictures submitted by any one person. A committee of three judges will be appointed in October by the President to select the best photographs. The winning pictures will be published in the 1935 Handbook and due credit given to the photographers. An added stimulus in this year's contest is that Jim Thompson will give enlargements of the four winning pictures and those winning honorable mention to the photographers. 58
