  • Any cotton shirt will serve for summer wear, a light weight wool is best for cooler seasons, and during cold weather two wool shirts, or one wool shirt worn with a light weight sweater, is better than one heavy shirt. Carry in your pack an extra wool sweater which can be slipped on at the end of the hike. Cotton whipcord, moleskin, khaki, workmen's or ordinary trousers are good for warm weather; woolen fabrics are warmer and afford better protection in cold weather. A pair of pajama pants under trousers is often satisfactory for winter going. Knickers are preferred by some duiing warm weather. Ribbed cotton undershirts and shorts are worn during warm weather; light weight woolen underwear or heavy cotton or silk-and-cotton for those who can't wear wool, is more comfortable for cold weather. Socks of soft wool properly fitted, or silk, or cotton, under wool serve to cushion the feet and absorb moisture. Leather shoes six or eight inches high; large enough to allow for the socks, swelling of feet after hiking, and additional length and width (nearly half an inch) of the foot when the weight of the body and pack is thrown on it, are best suited for both men and women. A leather sole and heel (low, broad and longer than usual) is a good all weather combination. Rubber heels which are, often, already on the footwear save much jarring on a long hike, but are slippery in wet weather. Clean thoroughly, dry and rub a little neatsfoot or similar oil in both the uppers and soles to keep the leather soft and pliable. While the above suggestions have been made in the interest of economy and comfort for the inexperienced hiker, the subject of comfortable wearing apparel has hardly been scratched.
