  • FOREWORD The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club issues its Handbook for 1934 with two purposes in mind; the first, to present in attractive and convenient form the program for the year, and the second, to give information that will be interesting and helpful to Club members and outsiders. We consider ourselves fortunate in being able to print a letter from Benton MacKaye, Nestor of the Appalachian Trail. Its message is one that each of us can consider thoughtfully for himself. Our President, too, has given us suggestions both practical and inspirational. We are pleased to publish the results of the first annual photographic contest, as judged by a committee appointed by the President. First and second places go to Richard Bagwell, whose pictures "combine composition, subject matter appeal and photographic technique." Third place goes to Harvey Broome, in whose picture "the personal element predominates, yet the composition and photography are very good." The fourth place was given to the picture of Dutch Roth's, "chiefly for the appeal of its subject matter." All the special bits of information in the book deserve as much consideration from you as you read, as they received from the people who wrote each one of these sections. The Handbook Committee is grateful to the Program Committee and to each hike leader for their cooperation with us; without it, there would have been no book. And the Editor is grateful to the Handbook Committee members for their cooperation ; without it,—well, you know where she'd be. We hope that you hikers will have as much fun on these hikes and other gatherings as we have had in planning this book for you. So— Allons! The road is before us!
