  • JUNE 3 and 4 THUNDERHEAD VIA BOTE MOUNTAIN AND DEFEAT RIDGE A great many years ago an argument arose as to the location of a new road to be built to the top o' Smoky. It was finally agreed upon to settle the question by a vote of the people concerned. The lead or ridge chosen upon which the road was to be built, was thereafter referred to as Vote (Bote) Mountain and the other ridge in the controversy, as Defeat Ridge. This hike is to determine in our own minds, if it was a wise choice. The course of our hike is up Bote Mountain to Thunderhead and down Defeat Ridge to our starting point. The settlement of this argument is, however, incidental r(°,,the drills, views and "feel" of this grand ol mounting" of Thunderhead, with its broad pasture and rocky promontory. It will be impossible to reach Thunderhead before dark on Saturday so we may spend the night in camp somewhere along the old Anderson road on Bote Mountain. Lunch the next day will be eaten on top of Thunderhead at the f- S. G. S. tower. Returning on Sunday there may be an argument between hiker and underbrush but, of course, we will be falling down hill. Leave Dixie System at 8:30 a. m. Take food Drive to Walker's valley, near Girl Scout Camp, and leave cars. Bring grub for three meals, equipment for camping out, lantern and canteen. Hiking distance, Saturday, about five miles and Sunday about eleven miles. Leaders: FRED J. SHULLEY (3-6451) L. H. ROLLINS (2-4640) 35
