  • HARVEY BROOME HIKE SUPERVISOR, FEBRUARY 4 and 5 APPALACHIAN TRAIL WORK TRIP Stekoah Gap—Cheoah Bald—Swim Bald— Nantahala Gorge Heretofore, our scheduled trips have been straight hiking, with a little camping thrown in occasionally. On this, however, hiking is incidental. The real purpose is to re-clear and re-mark a portion of the Appalachian Trail. Throughout the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Park Service builds and maintains our trails. But, outside the Park, we must build, clear and mark that part of the Appalachian Trail from the Smokies to the Nantahala Gorge, which is under the direction of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. We are to cover about 15 miles on this trip. In two other trips, coming later in the year, we will cover the remainder of the 40 miles between the Smokies and the Gorge, at Wes- ser, North Carolina. In special trips last year this entire route was scouted, marked and given a preliminary clearing. It is our purpose to go over it once each year, to keep it in good condition—free from underbrush or blow-downs and with plenty of A. T. markers. Workers on last year's trips predict these work trips will become the most popular, and the most enjoyable, on our year's schedule. The plan worked out last year calls for work parties of five each.
