  • INTRODUCTION The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club is now in its seventh year, a very active and a firmly established organization. It was founded in October, 1924, by a small group of enthusiastic hikers of Knoxville, whose unflagging interest and enthusiasm in these six years have been the foundation for the club's steady growth and increasing activity. The original purpose of the club was primarily to provide opportunities for the enjoyment of the out-of- doors through hikes and outings, and that is still the principal aim of the club. Furthermore we seek to provide social and educational opportunities, such as we gain from our indoor get-togethers, with their instructive programs and their good times; we encourage and leach out-of-door ethics, and the restoration and protection of all wild life; and we are constantly acquainting our members and the general public with the beauty of the Great Smoky Mountains. The annual Handbook is planned to give the information that is necessary to carry out the year's program. The descriptions of the hikes scheduled for 1931 were written mostly by the leaders themselves, or in some cases by members who were more familiar with the particular trips than the leaders. We do not attempt in these articles to give detailed directions for following the trails; this would be impossible in a book of this size. We try to describe all the attractive features of our hikes, and give enough information so that the exact nature of the trips is evident. An unusually interesting and important event occurs on our calendar this year. In June the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club will be hosts to the Appalachian Trail Conference on June 12th, 13th, and 14th. Last year the conference was held at Skyland, Virginia, in the Shenandoah National Park, and there were present about 200 persons from hiking and out-of-door clubs of many Eastern states. There will be sessions on the 12th and 13th,
