  • Locality North Carolina- Tennessee-Virginia boundary line south to «atauga River Doe River to Holiohucky River Nolichucky River to Big Pigeon River Big Pigeon River to Little Tennessee River Little Tennessee River to Hiwassse River Guyot name Stone Uueka or Iron Bald Great Smoky Geographic Board name Stone Dhaka Bald (Max Patch from Big Pigeon to French Broad.) Great Smoky Unicoi The Iron Mountains (U. s. Geographic Board decisions, January 16, 1932 and corrections in lecisions of liarch 2, and April 6, 1932) parallel the Stone Mountains to the west from Doe River northeast for 80 miles to nmx New Riveri in Virginia they form the Smyth-Graham and Graham-/ythe county boundary. This nomenclature leaves a gap in the western range between the Stone Mountain at the Watauga River and the Uhska ^fountains at the Doe River\ here the Stete boundary follows an arbitrary line. The Iron Mount a ins would seem more properly to extend to the head of Horth Indian Creek of the Nolichucky River, including, south of Doe River, the range called "Stone Mountain" on the U. S. Geological Survey Roan Mountain Quadrangle. The Guyot manuscript and map make no reference to the Hols ton Range, paralleling the Iron Mountains to the west. Beyond the fork of the Iron Mountains, near Flattop (west of Highway No. 12} no peaks are indicated in the Iron Mountains Nangei Guyot's attention was devoted to the Whitetop and Mt. Rogers (Balsam) spur which at Pond Mountain leads into ths Stone fountains. 15. Big Bald (8,630 ft.) on the Tennessee-North Carolina boundary line (extreme northwest oornar of U.S. Geologies! Survey Mt. ill tonsil quadrangle). 16. How known as Max Fetch (4,660 ft.)» perhaps a typographical error. 17. This is the nameless peak, 6,216 ft. in elevation, on Saltan Mountain, two milet northwest of the words "Luftee Knob" on the u. S« Geologies 1 Survey Great Smoky Mountains Park Advance Sheet No. 15. The 6,216 ft. peak Is undoubtedly the original Luftee Knob end the North Carolina Nomenclature Committee lias recommended that it be called Luftee Knob.
