  • '.he Vlntt Balsam Mountains, looking southeast from Hyatt Bald. A Boy Scout cooking kit is good for one man going alone. For a party, there should be a frying pan, coffee pot with folding handle, and, for each member, a plate, knife, fork, spoon, and a seamless pint cup. 'The party should also have a hunter's hatchet for obtaining firewood, and plenty of matches in a water-proof can or box. For campers who intend to hike along the ridges canteens are absolute necessities. I'or instance, if one hikes along the main ridge of the Great Smokies eastward from New-found Gap he will travel for about 18 miles without finding water with the exception of one place on Hughes Ridge. Other serviceable items for a camping trip are: Compass, flashlight, and a strong pocket knife. The amount of food, of course, is to be determined by the number in the party and the length of the trip.
