In the old pioneer days, the American had but one thought about a tree, and that was to cut it down." The Appalachians and the White Mountains The establishment of National Forest Reservations in the Southern Appalachian Mountains and in _^^^^_^_^^__ the White Mountains of New Hampshire is a project worthy of the most enthusiastic efforts of every American citizen. If the facts are once put clearly before the country, the common sense of the people will compel action by Congress. The American Civic Asso- The Destinies of ciation submits a few of the Fifteen States more important considerations which affect in an amazing degree the destinies of at least nine Southern states and five Northern ones, and in a very substantial way, even though less directly, the interests of the country as a whole. The bill now before Congress calls for the establishment of these two reservations and an appropriation of two millions of dollars in the South and one million dollars in New Hampshire. The need of immediate action is pressing. The disasters that come from the destruction of the mountainside forests would be vast and overwhelming. (OVER)

This article and map are concerned with national forest reserves and indicate that, at the time, there were no forest reserves east of the Mississippi. The article outlines the importance of the watershed and timber as an industry, but also gives mention to “Scenery as a Commercial Asset.” While the article was not written by the Appalachian National Park Association, it was collected by the association as a part of its records.
