  • This photograph by Vivienne Roberts shows Ella May Sequoyah, wife of Amoneeta Sequoyah with her son, Amoneeta, Jr. and her daughter, Rachel Lydia Sequoyah. The rivercane purse basket on Mrs. Sequoyah's arm, also called a "shopper," is typical of baskets used by Cherokee women for purses or shopping and was a popular style for basketmakers to produce for sale in Cherokee craft shops. The baskets featured a variety of designs created by dyeing the splints or splits with natural dyes like black walnut root (varying shades of brown), butternut root (black), butternut tree root (black or dark brown), bloodroot (varying shades of orange or reddish brown), or yellowroot (light orange or yellow) to obtain contrasting colors.
