  • This undated photograph by an unknown photographer is of Cherokee basket weaver, Sally Ann Taylor Wade (1924-1988). Wade is shown making white oak splits with a pocketknife, preparing materials needed to weave a basket. Wade was born in the Birdtown Community of Cherokee, North Carolina and learned the craft from her mother, Julia Ann Ned Taylor (1902-1991). The Taylor family--Julia Taylor and her four daughters, Rachel, Sally Ann, Pauline, and Dolly--were all accomplished basket weavers. In 1978 the Indian Arts and Crafts Board organized an exhibition of Taylor family baskets shown at Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual. This photograph of Sally Wade appeared in a brochure that accompanied the exhibition. This photograph appears in the collections of both the Museum of the Cherokee and Qualla Arts & Crafts Mutual.
