  • oes leads the way... The Western Carolina University African American community has enjoyed many positive changes this year, and the Organization of Ebony Students Executive Board is to be held personally responsible. OES Executive Board members are Tyreace Dixon (president), Lenn Kirkendoll (vice-presidentO, Brent Roberts (past president), Michelle Knoell (secretary), Joe Monroe (treasurer), Thaddeus Cunningham (parliamentarian), Venus Miller (Miss OES), Cory Moore, Jamel Milliken, Shunda Sanders, and Farrah Wolford (members-at-large). The Board has strived to incorporate its' theme, "As we search for UNITY we must have LOVE within." OES has seen dramatic increases in program participation this year which secretary Michelle Knoell attributes to, "OES is more respected than it has been in the past. We have gotten things done and listened to the students." OES has gotten down to business and gotten things done. The Executive Board was instrumental in planning the meeting with new WCU Chancellor John W. Bardo earlier this semester. As a result of the meeting the African-American community had an opportunity to meet the chancellor and express their concerns. Chancellor Bardo has acted on many of the students concerns in acquiring African-American hair care products in the university bookstore. Bardo also met with the art department at the request of a student. OES has also had success in fundraising this year. The Board raised a considerable amount of money in its' Dream Date Auction and credit card drives. Their persistency in fundraising helped to produce "Stompfest '95", OES's major project for the semester. "Stompfest '95" was very successful bringing six step teams and over 1000 people to H if I fi! ii "f I ill f§ jig i: | '|J 1|| Jg I The OES Executive Board reflects on a successful semester. "Stompfest '95" chairman Lenny Kirkendoll commented, "I think the step show was pretty successful for it to be our first big step show. We are looking for ways to improve it next year." At the helm of OES's success is the dynamic leadership of President Tyreace Dixon. Dixon began planning this year's events soon after his election in the Spring of '95.
