Dr. Schenck attends tree planting ceremony

Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck came to North Carolina in 1895 where he was chief forester for the Biltmore Estate until 1909. A pioneer, he began the first school of forestry in North America, Biltmore Forest School, in 1898 and operated it on the Estate until 1909. In 1910 he based the school in Sunburst, North Carolina and took his students throughout the United States until 1913 when the school closed with 400 graduated. In 1951, sponsored by the American Forestry Association, students traveled across America with him to visit the forests they had grown together. In this photograph, Reuben B. Robertson (right) introduces Dr. Schenck who was a special guest during Champion’s annual Woods Party at Lake Logan.
