  • Dr. Carl Alwin Schenck came to North Carolina in 1895 where he was chief forester for the Biltmore Estate until 1909. A pioneer, he began the first school of forestry in North America, Biltmore Forest School, in 1898 and operated it on the Estate until 1909. In 1910 he based the school in Sunburst, North Carolina and took his students throughout the United States until 1913 when the school closed with 400 graduated. In 1951, sponsored by the American Forestry Association, students traveled across America with him to visit the forests they had grown together. This photograph shows the plaque that was placed along with the newly planted spruce tree. The plaque reads: This Tree planted June 9, 1951 by Dr. Carl A. Schenck commemorates the fact that in 1910 the Biltmore Forest School founded by Dr. Schenck, as the first School of Forestry in America, held its sessions in the nearby Sunburst logging camp of the Champion Paper and Fibre Company. Dr. Schenck was a special guest during Champion’s annual Woods Party at Lake Logan. More information about this photograph can be found in Champion publication The Log.
