had. Same Hawken too bad. I am writing Scofield to see if it is not yet possible to use some of this matter. I feel that you would be willing to let us use it oh but I have had a bunch of trouble getting this work straight, however I feel that I have not made many blunders, I may have given offence to some but I had to do it. I have written every Chapter conscientiously, now a word concerning your article in the Am Rifleman (Last issue). Yes there are a few of the old ones still in good shape. My old Killdeer, for example, and it is a undefined specimen made before the Revolution. Killed an Indian who was getting away with Miss Weber by its owner Christian Kauffman in Berne Township Nestles Co. Pa. The Rifling is splendid and it shoots beautiful its history is most heresay it is authentic. Rifle must have been made not later than 1770. It has changed hands but 3 times since was a priceless treasure in the Kauffman family until 1904 when James Bohen, a grandson of Kauffman died. The Rend Isaac Herbein (a neighbor) bought it at

In a letter to Horace Kephart on April 28, 1924, Dillin writes to Kephart discussing types of rifles and trade transactions. He explains a terrible business trade with Western City Co. and Marc Woodmansee for two Hawken rifles. He comments on Kephart’s article in “Am Rifleman” and explains his Killdeer rifle’s ownership history.
