  • A Neighborly Call From The Hills To Kindred Spirits Everywhere CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA, MAY, 1925 NEW BOARD MEMBERS NAMED FOR CULLOWHEE BY GOVERNOR McLEAN Members of Retiring Hoard Have Rendered .Valuable Service. Am6ng the many administration bills passed by the recent legislature, was one giving a new charter to Cullowhee, and providing a new method of appointing members of the board of trustees. The old charter provided for seven members, to be appointed by the State Board of Education, and each to serve for a term of five years. Their terms overlapped, so that not more than two members would be retiring from the board in any one year. The new charter provides for nine members, to be appointed by the governor, each for a term of four years. There is little or.no overlapping of terms by the new scheme, as all nine members were to be appointed within six months of the passage of the act. In pursuance of the authority vested in him by the new charter, Governor McLean has appointed an entirely new board for Cullowhee. consisting of the following: Reuben Robertson, Canton; Mrs. Giles Cover, Andrews; J, I',. Coburn, Bryson City; M. 0. Did on, Ruth- erfordton; T. H. Shipman, Brevard; Mrs. J. W. Pless, Sr., Marion; Alex Moore, Franklin; James G. K. Mc- Clure, Fairview; Dr. J. \. Hill, Mur- Phy. The retiring board consisted of the following: Walter E. Moore, Sylva, chairman; Mrs. E. L. McKee, Sylva: J. Robert Long, Bryson City: John W. Walker, Andrews; D. L. Boyd, Waynesville; MM. S. \V. Battle, Asheville; and W. J- Watt, Charlotte. Of this board, Mr. Moore has had the longest continuous official connection with the whool, as most of the other members nave been appointed within the past tew years. This board has been in office during the period of the greatest Physical expansion of the school. The Culowhee Training School will open June 2, 1925, for a period of six weeks. Students desiring to enroll for the summer should do so at once, as the number will be limited to 100 for the entire school and 25 for each teacher. Stevenson the 6th and 7th grades. P. W. Alexander will direct the school for the summer. Miss Lacy, Miss Rainwater, and Mr. Alexander need no introduction to Cullowhee as each served in. his or her respective capacity during the past school year. Miss Newton is a native of Tennessee. She has taught primary work for a number of years and is exceptionally well qualified for the position. Miss Stevenson is a North Carolinian and comes to us from the Biltmore High school. Miss Stevenson has taught the 7th g);ade at Biltmore for several years, where she has made an enviable rec- Several Changes Occur OUR ALUMNI In County School Heads LOAN FUND CULLOWHEE ALUMNI AFFECTED There have been many recent shifts in county superintendents of schools in the western counties, notably in Buncombe, Madison and Jackson. In Buncombe, Dr. Murphy, of Mississippi, supercedes Professor Frank L. Wells, who has held the superintend- ency in that county for the past four years and who has made an enviable record, and placed Buncombe county in the front ranks in education in North Carolina. Professor Wells is a graduate of Cullowhee, A. B. graduate of the University of North Carolina, and a graduate student of Columbia University. In Madison County Professor Homer Henry has been succeeded by Professor O. S. Dillard who has been superintendent in Jackson County for the last four years. In Madison County Professor Henry has done a good work, notably in enforcing (Continued on page 2) Important Notice To Graduates Of Cullowhee. At our annual banquet last commencement the Alumni pledged themselves to undertake to raise ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS to lend to needy students who were already in attendance or who wished to attend the Normal. Letters have been mailed to representatives of each class asking them to solicit funds from the different members. Many have responded; many have not. We are still a long way from the goal of our pledge. This is to urge every member of the association, every graduate of Cullowhee, wherever you may be and whatever you may be doing, to respond to this worthy cause. It is not expected that those who are not able t0 give large donations embarrass themselves, but we desire to have every one give something.
