Champion employee store
-
This photograph shows the inside of the Champion Fibre Company employee store. The store, established in 1926, was just one option for buying groceries and dry goods in the town of Canton. Before World War II, a company scrip called doogaloo was used in lieu of cash. Employees could choose to use store credit, but only up to 25% of their paycheck. Employees received a two-weeks’ worth supply of groceries each Christmas. The store was torn down in 1959 along with the YMCA to make way for the number 19 machine. Negatives are damaged causing lines throughout image.
