Sloan estate, and is a portion or State Grant no. 252 issued by the state to John Gray Blount. As State Grant ·No. 252 from the time said Grant was issued by the State up through and including the time said Grant passed by the last will and testament ot James n. Love to his executors has been tully treated in the analysis or ti~le or the Sidney Nelson tract, t he same will not be repeated in t his analysis, but may be seen by reference to paragraph one thru paragraph ten of the analysis of t he Sidney Nelson tract, page three of this abstract. 2. Tract No .• 206•a is a portion of a 200 S'll'e tract conveyed by J. Ih r.ove to Young Bennett, and a portion or a 210 acre tract conveyed by J. R. Love, et al to G., L. _P.~-~er. Thirty acres or tract No. 206-a being deeded orr of the 200 acre tract, and eighteen acres ot tract No. 206-a being deeded ott ot t he 210 acre tract. 3. On August 5, 18621 James R. Love conveyed to YOUM Bennett a tract or land containing 200 acres, which said tract ... braces a portion or tract No. 206-a. T.; is deed is signed only by .r. R. Love; and at t he time said conveyance was made, J. R, Love owned a one-half undivided interest in the land so conveyed • and the remaining one-half undivided tnterest belonged to the heirs at law of Robert Love. However, this deteot in t he above deed has been 186 cured, ratified and confirmed in a suit entitled ".Tames Gudger, et al VS .Tames R. Love, et al"• By consent of all the parties to said suit, a judgment was signed authorizing .Tames R. Love to exeoute titles to any portion of the "Love Speculation Lands" and acoount to said heirs tor the proceed·s obtained on suoh sales, A copy of this judgment is duly recorded in the office ot' the Clerk of' the super10%' Court tor Buncombe County, North Carolina. see page twenty-seven of this abstract, 4, The next trace that we have been able to find a~­f'ect1ng t he 200 acre tract above mentioned, is in an instrument where c. !'lelson, .Tolln Williams and :r. R. Palmer, commissioners, appointed to allot t he homestead or Young Bennett - and said commissioners allot the above 200 acre tract to Young Bennett as his homestead. We have been unable to find trom the Clerk's records, any trace of' a suit against Young Bennett, and presume that the original papers . have been misplaced and are unable to say whether or not the allotment to Youns Bennett of t his homestead was made according to law, The proceedings ot the commissioners are ot' record in the office of the Register o~ Deeds for Haywood County. see page 191 ot this abstract. 5. We have been unable trom our search ot' the recorda to find any trace or a conveyance trom Young Bennett affecting the above tract. The next trace we find of this tract is in a deed tr0111 R.. v. Welch and wife, M. c. Welch, to J. P • .tarrett, dated Marth first, 1863. The records do not disclose in what llianner R. v. Welch acquired title to t his tr~ct. The above deed is duly recorded in Haywood County. See page 192 of this abstract. s. on February 4, 1890, J. P. Jarrett and wife; E.E. Jarrett, conveyed to c. !4. Jarrett a tract ot land containing 30 · acres, more or less, which tract is a portion ot the 200 aore traot mentioned in the preceding paragraph of this analysis, and the said 30 acres being a part of tract No, 208·a. This deed is of record in Haywood County, See :pa~ 193 of this abstract. 7, As the next conveyance made by c. M, Jarrett em­braces the whole of tract No. 206•a, we will now consider the chain of title making up the remainder of tract No, 206•a. 8, On August 71 1885, J. Rt Love, for himself• and 187 J, R. I.ove, Dillard love, J. B. Love and William Welch, executors ot Robert Love, conveyed to George Pelmer a tract of land containing 210 acres, more or less, which tract is a portion of state Grant No. 252 and embraces a J?Ortion of tract lifo, 206•a. At the time said deed was made, J. R. Love was the owner of' one-halt undivided interest in State Grant No. 2.52 1 and the remaining one-halt interest belonged to the heirs at law ot Robert Love, We have examined carefully the las~ will and testament of' Rob•rt Love, and find that his exe~ utors were not empowered to convoy land by the terms of said will. Howeve~. de• feet in the above deed has been cured by e. consent judgment entered in t he case of "\'i• L, Henry, et al vs w. L. Hilliard, et al", page forty-one of this abstre.ot. The above deed is duly recorded in Haywood County. See page l94 of this abstract. 9. on September 31 18001 G. L. Palmer and wife, Nancy J, Palmer, conveyed to c. M. I!e.rrett a tract of' land containing 18 acres, which tract is a portion of the 210 acre tract mentioned in the 188 preceding paragraph of t his analysis. The said 18 acre traot be­ing a portion or tract No. 20&-a. see pageJ~5 ot this abstract. 10. We now have the whole of ~raot No, 206•a vested 1n c. r: •. ra.:rrett. On March so, 1894, c, M. Jarrett and wire, Laura P• Jarrf)tt. conveyed to "lli. A• Palmer tl!'aot No. 206•a. This deed 18 of record in Haywood County. See page_ 196 of t his abstract. 11. on January 9, 1897, William A. Palmer and wite, Mila Palmer, conveyed to J,. F, :Palmer tract No. :305•a. This deed is ot record in Haywood County. See page 1~7 o:e t his abstract. 12. On J"uly 23, 19201 J, F. Palmer and wite, Lou Pal­mel', conveyed tract No. 206-a to B. ;r, Sloan. This 60-acre tract 206a in Cataloochee was owned by Lou Palmer King. While, in general, the Great Smoky Mountains region was sparsely populated, the Cataloochee Valley remained an exception. By 1900, the population of Cataloochee had grown to 1,000 residents living in hundreds of log and frame homes. A few historic buildings have been preserved on site, including two churches, a school, several homes, and outbuildings. The North Carolina Park Commission was tasked with purchasing land for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and people living in Cataloochee were among those displaced. Cataloochee families continue to return for annual reunions. In 2001, the National Park Service re-introduced elk into the valley.
