  • :** " TANNING Milas Messer Place Cove Creek, NC File No, III-F-12641 Neg. No. 12641 Rubbing the pelt side of the hide with a scythe blade. This helps to smooth the pelt side and also squeezes out much of the spent ooze, allowing the hide to absorb the strength of the new ooze. A large hide, as shown in the picture, requires from 10 to 12 months to tan...the "ooze" should be renewed once a month during this period of justas often as the ooze gets too weak to tan the hide. The hide of a yearling requires about 6 months to tan. Each time the ooze is renewed, the operation of rubbing the hide must be repeated. Date: 5/19/1937 Photographer: E. E. Exline Size: 4% x 6%
