W&WELB HARBOR SoE ED TO BE WELL DEFENDED AGA NST SURPRISE ATTACK BY the Naval forces clustered around It and the A^my had stabilized a front about twenty miles further north, on th© other sids of Mariveles mountain-* but what about the seasoast between! Host of it was mvy rugged, and backed up by thick jungio, but the one rood which provided the only line of sosmnn-ication to th© front lines passed quite dose to the sea at many points* Cam- mand«r Francis Bridget, who had be©a left In charge of the remmont© of Naval aviation in the Philip-; ines,&did not think that this tenous Hie line was adequately defended by the A my against a sudden land ng on the eo&st* Frank was never one to sit bask and criticise when action was needed* Be hod under his own ©©Esmond shout a hundred and fifty aviation man, mostly ground crews, who had been left without work wh©a their plows were destroyed* Be sold th© proposition to other Naval organisations in Bataan, and collected a hundred and thirty m©m ,aromes, amd a few refigees frp, tje on-fated Cavite Navy Yard* * fines© heterogenous grops Bridget formed into the "Naval Battalion", with "Bap" Goodall, of the Canopus, as sec nd in command* Tom Bowers of th© Asmuniton detail and a few Marine and aviation officers were th© ©ompnny commanders* Equipment was a serious problem* * Th© Marines were, of course, ready for field duty, but th© others were sailors, and th© Navy doesnH provide sueh ©quipaent for land operations at the best, to soy nothing of th© fact that several of the ©©gropes had h^ma separated from their normal supplies by unf or seen e roumstanoes* - owsver, rifles and ammunit on of seme sort wer© finally. b*gg©d, borrowed or stolon for most © th© mem. Their whit© uniforms wer© dyed to what was supposed to be khaki color, but whidh turned out to b© a sickly mustard yellow* O^ly about one eant«©a ©ould b© found fer every three mem, but th© great American tin eon was pr9a»9& into service to mak© up th© deficiency. This had th© advantag© that th© content© ©ould b© heated over a fir® in cas© of meed, provided oar© was exercised not to melt out th© solder* Training was next essential, Perhaps twe—thr des of the sailors knew which ©nd of the rifle should be presented to the enemy, and had even practiced on a target rang©,; but field training was practically a closed book to them* Th© experienced Marines were spread thinly throughout each ©ornpasy, in the hop© that through precept and example, their qualities would be assimilated by th® rest* Thus ©quipped, mostly with boundless enthusiasm and dstermaaotion, the ootloy array salliod forth one day late in January for a preliminary hike t© the coast to harden them up. At th© base of lit, Pueot near th® sea they met an agitated or op of soldiers who had just been chased by Japs from their signal station on he mountain top* Apparently a landing had been made cm nearby Longosk - Point the night before, just as Bridget feaad* and th© invaders were working their way inland toward the vital ©ommunieation road* S»r© was "fieda training" with a vongeaae© for budding .infantrymen*

A copy of the account of the exploits of the USS Canopus and her crew written by Capt. E. L. Sackett, USN and forwarded by the Navy Department to Steven J. Owens, father of Samuel Robert Owens. Samuel Robert Owens (1918-1995) was stationed at Cavite Naval Yard in the Philippines when the United States entered World War II. He was a member of the crew of the submarine tender USS Canopus (AS-9), which was actively involved in the defense of the Bataan peninsula until the fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. The majority of the crew of USS Canopus, including Owens, were captured by the Japanese at Corregidor, and became prisoners of war. Owens remained a POW until the end of the war and received the Silver Star and Bronze Star for his service.
