  • where fragments and escapirg steam had caused the most casualties, administer* ing lastr rite© to dying men and helping to evacuate the injured to makeshift dressing stations, dressing stations. The officers in charge of the enjine room. Machinist Hutchinson and Slsctricion Hall, had both been badly wounded by the first blast, but the Chief Machinist's Mae© left in charge shut off the steam at the boilers until severed steam pipes could b©.isolated, thus saving more of his men from being sealed to death* He then helped th© wounded to safety, and w&s later found wandering around dazed, having no recollection of what happened &fter th© blastl Four hours the devoted crew fought before all fires were finally out. When the magazines were examined, several crusod and exploded pwoder charges were found, mute ©idsnce showing how ©lose t© complete destruction the ship and all on board had been, nothing less than a miracle could have prevented a general magazine explosion at the time th© bomb set off those pewd©r charges, but miracles do happen, Th© engines of destruction had carried it(s own antidote, and it's fragments which severed pipes near th© magazines had released floods of steam and water at th© danger point, automatically keeping fire away from th© rest of the powder. Our numbers just weren't up that day. In months to follow, cur crew could never quit® believe, until the battered hull finally slipped t© its last rsst beneath the waves, that so ehow the old girl would nob manage to pull through, as she had that day, and tak© them all out to rejoin th© Fleet, Th© some night, up wont the "Business as Usual* sign, and repair men went to work binding up the old lady's wounds, at the same tim© otherw were busy servicing submarines*
