  • Wags comes to Western after spending four years as the offensive line coach at Nebraska, working under former ornhusker head coach Bill Callahan. He also spent time urning around a struggling Wayne State program as their head coach. Dr. Bardo and Chip (Smith) have made the commitment here to put the school in a position to be successful. Now its our job as the coaching staff and the football team to ake that run with them, said Wagner. Before he arrived at Wayne State College, the school had a 2-29 record and was in the midst of an 11-game losing streak. Wags turned things around in seven seasons, and posted an overall record of 44-37-1 and was inducted into he schools Hall of Fame. Wagner was signed to a five-year contract worth $830,000 to do the same thing to the Catamount football eamturn around a struggling a program that has posted 2-9 and 1-10 records in the last two seasons and is current- ly suffering through 15 consecutive Southern Conference lefeats. There is enough talent in place for our program to be successful in our first year here. But in your first year, uccess is not measured by wins and losses, it is measured by the direction that you are headed, said Wagner. hile he wants to get The Cats to the top of the Southern Conference at some point, he also wants his team to come but and post wins next season and does not want to worry about the future at this point. The seniors have one more year left, and the juniors have o more years. They dont want to know what this program is going to do in four or five years. They want to win now. e have to go into every game thinking we are going to in, and knowing that if you play to the best of your ability hen you will have the opportunity to win, said Wagner. The search for a new head coach took 49 days to omplete, and because of this Wagner has lost some pre- cious time as far as recruiting goes, but Wags is optimis- ic that he and his staff can bring some high quality talent o Cullowhee next season. We have to identify the players in the local area and make sure they have an opportunity to come to Western arolina. | dont see a reason of going to Florida or Califor- nia to get players when there is plenty of talent in North arolina, said Wagner, We are going to put our efforts in a three hour radius of our campus and the state of North Carolina. Wagners recruiting philosophy goes deeper than just getting a player to sign on the dotted line; he also ants the incoming recruit to be a right fit in the classroom and for the school. On signing day we might not have as many players as other schools because I am not going to sign someone just to sign them. We are going to do our research and make sure its the right fit for the player to come to Western Carolina. With National Signing Day right coming up in February, Wags knows the possibility of getting players from the junior ollege level, and it is an option he will consider. He will only do it if he has to in order to fill a vacant position on the team. If that is an opportunity we need to explore then we will. | iont think you can live and die from junior college recruits be- ause you lose them. After two years they are gone, so we want to build our program with primarily high school players. If we need a junior college player to make an impact or fill in a void then we ill explore that opportunity, Wagner said. Coach Wagner has measured success by the amount of ins and losses of the program next season, but Josh Deaver, ho will be a senior next season, would be content if he leaves he program headed in the right direction. Winning would be great. Thats the goal of playing foot- ball. We do need to turn the program around for the future players and the alumni. We want to give them something to be proud of, said Deaver. in order for things to turn around for the Catamount foot- ball program, Deaver said that other than bringing some key recruits in, there is one thing in particular that Coach Wagner should focus on: discipline. We need to get a good handle on the discipline of the eam and get to the point where everybody is giving their best. hats something weve failed to do in the three years Ive been | here. Our problem has not been our talent level, its what we have been putting into it, said Deaver. Zack Jaynes, who red-shirted his freshman season, will be in a tough battle for the starting quarterback position liked what he saw, when he met Wagner for the first time on January 4th. He is all business and | like that about him. | like how he is trying} | o come in here and win right now. Thats what everyone on the eam wants to hear right now. He has both feet on the ground and has everything under control, said Jaynes. Before being introduced as the head coach, Wags already hired the majority of his staff that he believes will fit the Cata- mount program well. He expects to win and in the future that is what is going to happen with this team. But next year is what everyone is focused on, and [ think hes got a good staff that could help us win next year, said Jaynes. When the students got back from break, Wagner met with he entire team and shared his philosophies with the players. he following day, Wagner, his staff, and the players went right o work to begin the turnaround process. With Wagner taking the : reigns as head coach, good things could be on the horizon for a atamount team that has struggled over the past few years.
