Fear not for this spring, we at the Western Carolinian plan on bringing you a myriad bf new and exciting hikes, from mountain top vistas with expan- sive views, fun places to camp, and of course: once the weather arms up, directions to the secret swimming holes the locals f ont want you to know about. | his week we are going to take you on a short trip, one that | ) ) : loesnt even require you to find a friend with a car. Driving into ampus you may or may not have noticed that there is a mountain hat separates our campus down the middle, starting by Dodson, ising to an old cemetery, then falling back down to Albright-Ben- on. Some of you may know the way, using it as a shortcut to get rom upper campus to Belk and the football stadium. Nestled at the top of this hill is a cell phone tower, water pu- ification site, and water tower that very few students ever notice br see. Of course, being investigatory journalists, it is our job to nform you of these secrets and it is your duty as students in the ountains to visit them. At the top of this hill, there is a road that proceeds past a gate and eanders upwards. Follow this for a few minutes, along the way ou will see where campus used to treat its water (and quite pos- sibly still does). Navigate around the fenced in rock building, and you will come out on a road that continues up the mountain. Along he way you will see a purple water tower on the right, and finally a branch that leads to the Verizon tower which aimost every student employs for basic communications. } t this point, we at the Western Carolinian must remind you that | respassing is very illegal, and our beloved police officers look for any and all reasons to hassle students. For this reason, please J void climbing the fences surrounding the two water reservoirs. Also, serious injury or death may occur if you were to fall from one of the towers. Before the right turn towards the Verizon tower though, the hike ontinues straight onto a slightly tougher trail. There are some emnants of the trail, but mainly, from here on out you will follow he ridge line to an opening in the woods. For your extra effort of avigating this faint trail, you will be rewarded with a birds-eye | iew of Cullowhee Valley, including the Jackson County Recreation enter, Cullowhee Elementary, and part of our campus. Senior Alex Crutchfield was randomly se- lected to shoot for the halftime giveaway, and left with 10,000 dollars in his pocket. Im was so excited I only got one or two hours of sleep last night, Crutchfield said. I knew | could make he first three shots, but the half court shot it tough. As soon as | let it go I could tell it was going in. | was so excited | had to just scream and jump up and down. Crutchfield entered his name only once into the drawing to decide who would be shooting for the half- ime giveaway. Approximately one thousand names, tudents and supporters alike, were entered into the drawing. The contest, provided by the Western Carolina University Athletic Department, required the partici- pant to first make a lay-up, free-throw, three pointer, and finally the half court shot for a chance at 10,000 dollars. Despite his newfound celebrity because of the hot, Crutchfield is going to be smart with his winnings. it still hasnt totally sunk in. The whole situation is just so crazy, | never would have thought I would win 10,000. I dont know what Im going to do with it yet. | ould use a new car. Ill probably just spend a couple housand of it on something fun and put the rest away. Alex Crutchfield is a senior Broadcast major from Greensboro, North Carolina. He has a broadcasting internship in Orlando this summer, and he will surely go down as one of the luckiest, clutch shooters in WCU ontest history. RB peeks SS
