WCU women thrash Appalachian State 82-65 By Andy Gambill wenewsmagazine The Lady Cats showed Appalachian State just why they won the 2005, SoCon Championship on February 6 as they thrashed the Mountaineers 82-65, The Lady Cats honored their all-time leading scorer Jayne Ariedge before the game by retiring her jersey and then came out with an inspired performance to give the Mountaineers a bad bus ride back to Boone. Ona snowy nightin Cullowhee, the Lady Cats were far from cold as they shot 50% from the field in the first half. The Lady Cats forced the Mountaineers into 25 tumovers and controlled the boards 41-36. The win was just the 5th this season for the Lady Cats but no doubt gave the team momentum as it heads into the final stretch of games before the SoCon tournament. The Lady Cats (5-17, 58 SoCon) received strong games from Lauren Powell, Monique Dawson, Teshymia Tillman, Teyawna Hardy, April Parker, and Amelia Miller. Powell and Dawson led the Cats in scoring as they each had 14 apiece. Asheville-native Powell was 3 of 6 from long-range while Dawson connected on 10 for 10 from the charity stripe. Tillman broke the App State pressure many times as she Contributed 13 points and 5 rebounds to the winning-effort. Hardy and Parker both played tough down low as Hardy finished the night with 12 points and 5 rebounds while freshman Parker had 10 points and 5 rebounds. Miller is the final Lady Cat deserving mention as she had only 8 points,, but the 5-foot-7-inch guard played tall as she pulled down 10 rebounds for the Catamounts. The game started out close as it was 11-11 at the 15:59 mark as Dawson, Tillman,2and Powell scored all 11 of the poihts.. Coming-out of an official timeout Chevon Keith drove the lane and found Parker down low on a nice pass to give WCU a 13-11 lead. After ASU pulled ahead 17-13, the Lady Cats struck back with a scoop shot by Powell anda jumper by Miler. Keith had'a huge block leading to a baseline jumper by Tillman to put the Lady Cats Up 20-9 at the 10:46 mark as the game continued to be tightly contested. Coming out of the official timeout, 6-foot-1-inch.junior center Erin May hurt Herself as stie dove for a loose ball. May collided with the press table and did not return in the game as she seemed shaken up on the play. May's injury gave ; the Cats a little bump in intensity as they pulled ahead 26-23 at 7:49 with a long jump shot by Dawson, The Lady Cats continued their interise play as the using intense pressure on the defensive end and the boar nt ona 15-3 fun his led fo any Powell gos for three points. Photo by Mark Haskett fast break opportunities as the Lady Cats led extended to 41-26 with 3:22 left in the half. App State, sensing the Lady Cats pulling away, went on their own mini- Tun as they cut the lead to 12 at 27.8 left in the half with a 4-1 run. Ashley Pellom prevented ASU from cutting the lead to 10 before the half as she took a charge with 3.7 seconds left to stop a Mountaineer fast break. ASU then became its own worst enemy as they allowed the Lady Cats to roll the ball almost all the way to half court. Tilman picked the ball up and drove to the basket where she hit a scoop shot to beat the buzzer and push the Lady Cats lead back to 44-30 going into halftime. App State came out strong in the second half though as they started off the half with a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 5 with 17:50 remaining. The Mountaineers used a 2-3 zone defense to confuse the Lady Cats and cut the lead even further to 4 points at 49-45 with 15:28 left. It looked as if the Lady Cats would give away another lead as they have done many times this season. The Lady Cats showed that their young team has matured much over the Season though and may have tumed the comer on blowing games. Instead of crumbling the Lady Cats pushed their lead back to 9. Ashley Pellom scored four straight points to push the Lady Cat lead to 58-49 heading into an official timeout with 11:23 left in the game. The veteran Mountaineers squad did not give up either as Eboni Kirby scored four straight points to cut Western's lead to 58-53 heading into a 30-second App timeout with 8:33 left. After two old fashioned three- point plays by both teams, the Lady Cats closed the door on any App State comeback with a 9-0 run using 5 points by Powell Powell hit a three-pointer then followed with a nifty lay-up on a fast break. With the lead back to 14 at 70-56 with 5:08 left to play the Mountaineers comeback chances were dead in the water, The Lady Cats closed the game by outscoring ASU 12-9 over the last five minutes as Monique Dawson went 6 for 6 from the free throw line to ice the Lady Cats victory. Leading the Mountaineers in the losing effort were Jaime Bennett, Greteya Kelly, Kiki Conyers, and Jocelyn Wyatt Kelley and Bennett each had 13 points apiece but Kelley had 7 steals while Bennett pulled down 5 rebounds. Conyers had 10 points While Wyatt also had, 10 points but came away with 7 rebounds. The game had an attendance of 414 in what was probably one of the best crowds in a long time for a Lady Cats game. The atmosphere was great and the Lady Cats received a standing ovation at the end of the game, Hopefully the Lady Cats can keep the momentum from the win. ESTER 23 CHROLIN WCnewsmagazine 25
