Retro toys appeal to both kids and the No, its not dja vu. Theyre back. Thats right! Twenty years after their initial debut, those adorable little Characters from Cleveland began reappearing on shelves in toy stores around the country. The Care Bears helped revolutionize the licensing industry in the 80s and we believe this is the ideal time to re- introduce them to a new generation of kids whose parents who grew up with them, said Mike Brown, vice president of licensing for American Greetings, in the 2002 press release announcing the re-launch of Care Bears. Based on their successful history, the billion in retail sales. They also starred in three hit animated movies and were featured on more than 400 different products, making them one of the most popular toys in the 80s. The bears from Care-A-Lot are not the only retro toys that are making a comeback (retro meaning as opposed to toys like Mr. Potato Head, Barbie, G. |. Joe, Hot Wheels and PEZ dispensers that have been around consistently for decades). Those Characters from Cleveland, inc., a subsidiary of American Greetings Corporation, also revived the popular Strawberry Shortcake line. Other companies, namely Hasbro and Hallmark, were quick to follow suit, reintroducing toys like My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, and the Transformers. Even Smurfs products, while not widely available on the retail market, can now be found online. In fact, classic toys are thriving in todays marketplace. According to an American Greetings Corporation press release, eighty-five percent of the new Care Bears 13-inch stuffed toys introduced in July [2002] at more than 600 Carlton Cards and American Greetings stores nationwide were gone in less than 15 days! Similarly, Care Bears junior apparel and clip-on accessories at trendy teen fashion chains have been consistent top sellers for more than two years. Awide variety of licensed products featuring retro toy characters have been released by various companies in the past two years. Consumers can find goods ranging from teen accessories to childrens toys and apparel to bed linens and party supplies. interestingly, retro toys are not popular only with children. They are in demand with two other very reintroduction of Care Bears makes sense. The brightly colored bears originally generated more than $1.5 WCnewsmagazine young at heart by Jennifer Wilkey different groups of consumers as well: parents, who fondly remember the toys they grew up with, and teens, who are embracing icons from the 80s for their retro chic appeal. In early 2002, the American Greetings Corporation commissioned a brand recognition study. We were astounded to learn that the Care Bears have an 88 percent recognition level among women ages 18 to 49, Brown says. More than 28 percent of those surveyed said they would definitely purchase Care Bears merchandise today. The Western population is no exception to these findings. In a recent survey of WCU students, 77.8% said they would purchase retro toys or merchandise now. Evidence of this can be seen around campus, with students displaying their favorite retro toy characters on everything from t-shirts to book bag patches and pins to cell phone covers. According to the survey, many WCU students are excited, nostalgic and sentimental to see their childhood toys revamped and reincarnated. I liked them when | was a kid, and | like that [my kids] like them too, says Jennifer Long, WCU senior and mother of three. My kids love Care Bears.
