  • Gevaedd 5 MFA students exhibit work at Asheville gallery by Jennifer Wilkey | WCEnewsmagazine The first twelve graduate students enrolled in Westerns new Master of Fine Arts degree program displayed samples of their work at an exhibition July 30 through August 2. The show, which opened Friday evening at 6 p.m., was held at the Wedge Gallery on Roberts Street, in Ashevilles river district The exhibition consisted of one piece of art by each of the twelve students: Marty Bargerons Lozenge (mixed media on wood); Laura Browns Gemelliparous (mixed media on canvas); Bil Clementss various objects in plaster and paper; Jennifer Lipseys Rendezvous (mixed media on masonite); Kelledy Franciss Empty Love Affair (a wearable dress of fabric and mixed media); | Constance Humphriess untitled oil on paper and fabric; Heidi Leitzkes Corner of the Back Lot (oil | on canvas); Tai Lipans Cabbage (oil on canvas); Justice Littlejohns New York Synergy (mixed media on canvas); Greg McPhersons untitled mixed media on canvas; Sarah Nobles Fancy Red (oil on canvas); and Kristen Sullivans untitled mixed media on wood. The highlight of Friday evenings well-attended opening ceremony was an informal Q &A session with New York art critic David Cohen, which began at 8 p.m. Born in London and educated at the University of Sussex and the Courtauld Institute of Art, Cohen is currently an art critic for the New York Sun as well as the editor of artcritical.com and gallery director at the New York Studio School. Cohen is one of six visiting artists and critics who teaches and advises the students in the MFA program. The program began offering classes this summer in the new Fine and Performing Arts Center. During the Q & Asession, students and audience members asked Cohen questions on subjects ranging from his personal ___ critiquing methods to what qualifies as art.
