  • March 28, 2001 NEWS WESTERN CAROLINIAN Presidential Candidates Vie for Office By Dawn Pasley News Editor Jermaine Baxter Baxter is pursuing a master's degree in public administration. He has served as president of t h e Organization of Ebony Students and as a SGA senator. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Baxter believes that student fees should be used for the benefit of the students, and he wishes to see more effort on the part of SGA to support student organizations. Jesse Lyons Lyons, a double major in management and financial planning, is from Franklin. He has served in the SGA Senate for a year and is president of the Kappa Alpha Order. Lyons is also active in the College Lyons encourages students to look at his web site, www.jesselyons.com, to examine his platform of issues, and he also would like student feedback on the issues that he rr*r"?H- Tripp Spongier Republicans and the Sons of the American Legion. "I'm running to give the students of Western Carolina University a strong voice on any issue that may come up," said Lyons. Jesse Lyons has chosen to highlight. "I don't have all the ideas, and I want to work for any issues any student presents to me," said Lyons. Tripp Spangler Spangler is a political science major from Shelby. He has served for a year in the SGA Senate and is chair of the Senate Academic Affairs subcommittee. He is a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, and participates in WCU's athletic booster club. Spangler cites three reasons why he is running for president: to improve communication between SGA and students on campus, to improve the way the SGA budget is handled, and to further a plan that would allow students to check other students' evaluations of the professors whose classes they are planning to take. "I want to be a strong advocate for the students at WCU," said Spangler. "I want to represent every student on campus. If I am elected president, my door will be open for all students to come talk to me about any concerns they may have." VP Candidates to Emphasize Reform By Lee Schwarz Staff Writer Chris Hall Chris Hall is a social sciences education major from Robbinsville, NC. He was elected SGA senator in the fall of 2000. He has been responsible for appropriating $28,000 to various clubs and organizations at WCU, and he has also helped to introduce legislation to make it possible for students interning and teaching to attend WCU without purchasing a meal plan. Hall would like to make life better for students at WCU. If elected, Hall would like to end bickering in the Senate, contribute to the leadership of JJ Rowe and Joe Cowan, and to modify the "pay for print" plan. He would also like to eliminate most of the frivolous bills in the Senate. In addition, Hall would like for students to have more confidence in the SGA by making sure that they Chris are more informed about the bills going through the Senate. Michael Lewis Lewis is a political science major from Franklin. He served in the SGA Senate for one year and was a member of the Senate finance committee. He was appointed SGA Chief of Finance last fall. He is a member of the Honors College and the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. Lewis enjoys working in the SGA and feels that he would improve quality of life for students at WCU. "I feel like I've made a lot of good working relationships with campus leaders, faculty, and staff," said Lewis. "I just feel like I I could make campus life I that much better." Jermaine Perry Jermaine Perry is a Hail psychology major from Rocky Mount, NC. Perry is currently serving as vice president of the College Democrats. He is also the OES representative to the SGA. Perry has worked to make sure that these organizations run smoothly. As student body vice president, Perry says he will fight to put the word 'student' back into student government. He would also like to reshape WCU into a smoother form. Perry would like to give the SGA back to the students, and he also is proposing reform to the current "pay for print" plan. SGA Approves Presidents' Council By Sara White Contributing Writer The Student Government Association hosted the inaugural Council of Presidents meeting last Wednesday evening. Presidents from all student organizations were invited to attend the forum. Western's Student Body President Jonathan Rowe welcomed representatives from 31 organizations and encouraged more organizations to get involved. The Council of Presidents will meet once a month under the direction of SGA. The purposes will be to improve student communication among student groups, provide a forum to discuss pertinent campus issues, and provide additional opportunities for all student groups to publicize and promote specific events and actions. The council will also enable WCU students to foster collective efforts or actions in a productive and concise way. Meetings will allow diverse input on any actions that affect all students. "The purpose of the council is to provide communication and interaction between student organizations. The meetings can also serve as a forum to discuss timely issues relating to students on campus," explains President Rowe. The meeting closed with 31 organizations becoming co- sponsors of legislation approving the creation of the WCU Council of Presidents. The WCU SGA Senate unanimously approved the resolution to formally recognize the council on Tuesday.
