WESTERN 6 CAROLINIAN NEWS April 12,2000 Options Available for Pregnant Students by Sam Helms Staff Writer Although the number of pregnancies among students at WCU has been few, there are resources available for women who may find themselves in this situation. "We saw nine confirmed pregnancy cases during the 1998-99 school year," said Debbie Beck, director of Health Services. When a student goes to Health Services and learns she is pregnant, many referrals are made to places where she can receive support and care, both medical and emotional. "We make sure she understands the importance of prenatal care," said Beck. "If she does not have a local MD, we immediately refer her to Jackson County Health Department. We also encourage her to get a check up and seek counseling, and we will give her brochures with information that will aid her." For the emotional aspects of dealing with a pregnancy, students may visit the Counseling Center. The counselors can talk to the woman and recommend support groups, or simply talk to her about her decision. "The counseling center sees no more than six women a year who have conceived and want to deal with the different aspects of their pregnancy," said June Wytock, a psychologist at the WCU Counseling and Psychological Center. "Women can choose between abortion, adoption, and keeping the child. The woman's background, relationships, and family support influence her choice." Stacy Alexander, a high school graduate and sophomore at WCU, is mother to a 2-year-old girl and stresses that raising a child while in college is demanding, but there are state-supported programs available to help. "I was asked about giving Brittany up for adoption or having an abortion, but I loved my unborn child and couldn't live with the idea of her going to a non-Christian family," said Alexander. "I receive support from Women, Infants and Children, a program that offers formula and food, nutrition education and counseling, and referrals until a child reaches five years of age. A student who works could also receive aid from Work First Family Assistance, which is an income supplement program for low-income families who work a minimum of 30 hours a week." Alexander admits that her experience has been challenging, but the rewards are well worth the effort. Traci Fazio, a 1997 graduate of WCU, learned that she was pregnant her senior year in college, three days before her 21 st birthday. "I didn't know where to turn or what to do," said Fazio. "I went to the Health Department in Sylva, and no one sat me down and explained to me what was available - I felt hopeless. I later went to see one of the doctors at Health Services and he talked with me about the different options." Fazio decided to have her child seven months into her pregnancy. "At the time, I was not sure what kind of involvement the father would have in our lives," said Fazio. "I made the decision based on the fact that I would be a single mother." Although Fazio took complete responsibility, she did acknowledge support from her parents. "My parents were very supportive and loving and were with me every step of the way," said Fazio. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
