  • November 3,1999 NEWS Million Dollar Baby Offered Hope With 'Skids For SCIDS' by Crystal Frame Managing Editor Eight-month old Kasey Maney has made her home in and out of hospitals across North Carolina for the past three months. Maney spent six to 10 days in Mission- St. Joseph Hospital before doctors, baffled by her condition, made the decision to transport the 13-pound baby to Duke Medical Center. Within one day, Duke University Children's Hospital found that the Skids for SCIDS Benefit Motorcycle Run WHEN: November 6 11:00am STARTING POINT: Indian Ink Tattoos Soco Road Cherokee, NC ENDING POINT: Bela Roma Skyland Drive Sylva, NC FOR MORE INFORMATION: Southern Warrior Racing (828)631-3312 Sylva native had Severe Combined Immune Deficiency Syndrome (SCIDS). The hospital bills are becoming very costly, at $2,200 a night for the treatment for the parainfluenza alone. Now some people in the community are trying to help. SCIDS is "a rare congenital disorder of the immune system that is characterized by the inability of the body to produce a normal complement of antibodies and T-cells," according to WebMD (webmd.com). It affects about one in 100,000 babies yearly. The most famous SCIDS victim was David Vetter, better known as the "Bubble Boy" because he spent his short life enclosed in a sterile plastic sphere to protect him from the diseases of the outside world. Friends and family alike are stunned by how this could happen. "Kasey was born healthy, but suddenly one day got sick," says Traci Haskett, family friend and WCU employee. "She was a happy baby... now she can't go out of the hospital room. And you have to wear a mask if you visit her," adds Shannon Sneed, Maney's aunt and also an employee of Western's Faculty Center. On August 26, Maney received a bone marrow transplant, which offers hope for a partial or complete cure, to try to rebuild her white T cells. If Maney's white T-cells aren't functioning normally by December 4 (100 days after the initial transplant), the family will have to pay for an additional bone marrow transplant. According to Haskett, Maney is quickly becoming a "million dollar baby, or more if she has to stay longer." To combat these expenses, Southern Warrior Racing of Sylva and Ri-Bo Hauling of Cherokee are sponsoring a motorcycle run to benefit Katina Ledford and Gary Maney, the infant's parents. Cars are welcome and there will be a drawing for a $100 gift certificate from Indian Ink Tattoos of Cherokee. Donations are welcome to help offset the rising costs of Maney's medical treatment. Before or after the motorcycle rally, contributions can be made on campus at Hunter Library in the Faculty Center, c/o Traci Haskett or Shannon Sneed. Checks can also be sent directly to the mother, Katina Ledford, at P.O. Box 571, Dillsboro, NC. 28723.
