  • September 15,1999 SPORTS CarouniaNis Hook InTERPrets Testudo and All Things 'Terrapin' COLLEGE PARK, Md. — This past weekend, several of the Carolinian staffers made the 600 mile, 10-hour trip north of the Mason-Dixon Line into Yankee territory. Despite returning to North Carolina 1-1 and a few dollars shorter, the trip past our nation's capital was very interesting. Unique Mascots The University of Maryland has a very interesting mascot; the Terrapin. I myself am a big fan of peculiar or unique mascots like the Wake Forest Demon Deacons or the WCU Catamounts. However, it's when schools jpW^pfe choose names for these icons that they lose respect. For instance, the terrapin is named "Testudo." I will restrain from commenting on the connotation of this name. However, I can't refrain from interjecting the parallelism between this turtle's name and the ram at UNC- Chapel Hill—Ramses, which also serves as the name of a Durex product. Testudo and Ramses—enough said. Sea of Red With all of the Maryland red in the crowd, it seemed that we had left the United States and entered "Red China." The crowd also chanted "Red-White," very similar to the crowd quieting "Purple-Gold" chant by Western. Only problem: Maryland wore red jerseys with black helmets and pants. Identity crisis? Besides, they don't even put sugar in their tea—how un-American! Stop playing with your words Following Shawn Snyder's intercepted pass, the makeshift "jumbo-tron" screen over the Maryland scoreboard read, "inTERPception," a cutesy play on words. My inTERPretation of this is simply, if the people of Maryland would use conTERPceptives, they wouldn't have the people to think up these insane captions. Copy Cats If imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, then University of Maryland's band has majorily sucked up to Duke's Blue Devil band and Cameron Crazies. After playing their fight song, "Maryland, My Maryland," the band broke into Gary Glitter's, "Rock and Roll Part Two." That's understandable. However, the UM faithful also add in the chants, "Hey, you suck!" and "We're gonna beat the hell out of you!" in the exact manner as does Duke. But maybe the two schools want to be like each other. After all, both basketball programs play in buildings that should be condemned (Cameron and Cole), both battle for the bottom of the ACC in football, and both are unable to keep overrated student-athletes from jumping into the NBA. Maryland Military Academy? Army, Navy, Air Force, Virginia Military, and The Citadel all fire cannons in honor of their teams. That makes sense. It even makes sense that the Mountaineers of West Virginia and even Watauga County Day Care Center in Boone fire a shotgun to announce events. But why in the world does the University of Maryland fire a cannon? Perhaps is the only time anybody or anything gets shot off in College Park. Washington, D.C. Falls Similar to the cannon commentary, following the game this past Saturday, Maryland "celebrated" with a fireworks show. If I hadn't known any better, I'd have thought General Lee and his confederate "Army of Northern Virginia" had invaded and were firing upon the Capitol. Rumors of "Teflon" Don and "The Postman" climbing the scaffolding that surrounds the Washington Monument are totally untrue. John W. in "Band Bliss" At half-time of the Cats-Terps game, 25 area high school bands joined the "marching turtles" on the field for a "salute" to the United States. Practically the entire field was covered with horns, tubas, and band members. It's a shame that Chancellor Bardo didn't make the trek northward. He'd been in heaven. He could have also seen how a real school handles football games. Hook takes on Testudo the Terrible Terrapin. photo by Don Costello Teflon Don Hook The Cats vs The Citadel Ga.
