Getting over that final hump has been the challenge. This year's team will look to return to the SoCon finals, but getting there may be more difficult in 1999. "The level [of play in the conference] is rising," said head coach Michelle Hansen, "and that's good. But there's no free W's." Another factor that may complicate the task is that the Cats have only four players returning from last year's 23-13 team. Two of the four returning players, Ramsey Herron and Christy Attebery, will leave the Cats in good hands. Herron, an academic All-America last season, had a team-high 109 total blocks and 41 service aces and will look to improve on those numbers her senior season. "Ramsey's really grown into this program since her sophomore year. Mentally and physically, she's really gotten tougher and taken on the leadership role on this team. Being a senior I think she's ready for the role," Hansen said. "I'd predict that she'll blow many blocking records out of the water." Hansen said about Attebery, WCU's top freshman last season: "I expect great things from 'Atty' this year. She could get some all-conference honors if this year's team does well." Hansen added that Attebery, along with Herron, will be the go-to players on the volleyball team this year. Southern Conference foes have kept tabs on WCU's defensive prowess since Michelle Hansen took over head coaching duties in 1997. That defensive skill will be the cornerstone of this year's team, according to Hansen. "This team's got guts. I think we'll be one of the scrappiest defensive teams in the conference this year," Hansen said. That defense will have a new venue to display their skills. The volleyball Cats will settle in the same lair as the basketball teams in the bowels of the Ramsey Center. "We're not gonna miss Reid," said Hansen referring to the glare from the windows, hundreds of markings on the floor, and the lack of air condi- 1999 Volleyball Roster # Name Pos. Class OH Fr. "We're excited that we get to play in a Class A facility," she said. Western's record in Reid last year was a remarkable 13-3 and the Cats have won more than 60 percent of their games at home. Rest assured that the 100% Whoop Ass club will be in full force at the RAC. The Cats will return to their old nesting place for three games this season (Oct. 4, Furman; October 28, Chattanooga; October 29, Georgia Southern). "We're hoping to jam the gym for those three games in Reid," Hansen said. Want to Join a Fraternity or Sorority? Come to: Greek lot August 24 8:00 p.m. Grand Room University Center
